We welcome you to the website for the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Cookeville, Tennessee. We are located on East 10th Street. We have been in ministry at this location for almost 50 years. Before that, we were located on Broad Street in downtown Cookeville. We began in the community in 1845, meeting jointly with the Methodists, the Baptists and the Disciples of Christ. In 1867, we became the first organized church in the community. For over 100 years we were located in downtown Cookeville, just off the Courthouse Square. In the early 1960’s, the congregation, under the visionary leadership of the Rev. Logan Tilghman, decided to move “out of downtown” and they purchased seven acres of land at the present location. It was a difficult move – for 100 years the church had been located in downtown Cookeville, but the congregation and pastor, sensing a growing community and the need for more space, made the decision to move. The church has experienced continued growth with the relocation.

As members of the Cumberland Presbyterian denomination, we are a connectional Church. We belong to a general church and we are members of Murfreesboro Presbytery and Tennessee Synod. Our denominational headquarters is located in Memphis, TN. The Cumberland Presbyterian church is also an international church with mission work around the globe.

As a part of the Reformed Body of Churches (Presbyterian), we are known as the evangelical arm of that body. We began in 1810 as a response to the doctrine of “double pre-destination” or fatalism. We believe that all who choose, who repent, who follow Christ, may be saved – and no other verse of scripture represents our Church more than John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that whoever believed in him would have eternal life.

So here we are. We believe that as an evangelical part of the body of Christ we are to “Share Christ with the World and invite the World to Christ!” We believe that we should “go deep into the Word and go widely into the World.”

We would love to be a part of your spiritual journey and invite you to share with us in ministry to the community for the glory of God.
