Joy Rachor has served as the Minister of Music at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church since 2002. In addition to overseeing the music and drama programs of the church, she directs the Sanctuary Choir, Girls Ensemble, Jubilate Childrens Choir, and the Cumberland Ringers Handbell Choir.
Joy brings a broad background of musical experience to her position as Minister of Music. She holds a B.M.E. from Peabody College, where she majored in piano, and minored in voice and organ. She later earned a Masters of Church Music from Scarritt Graduate School, where she was the graduate assistant for the choral degree program.
Joy taught public school music in Colorado and Indiana before returning to her native Tennessee. She has directed church choirs for the past 30 years, and has taught piano lessons for over 35 years. Joy served as an adjunct professor at Tennessee Tech University for nearly 20 years, and directed Mastersingers, Cookeville’s Community Chorus, for 8 years. In 1999, she was named Arts Educator of the Year by the Cookeville Arts Council.
Joy is a member of the Board of Directors for the Middle Tennessee Chapter of Choristers Guild. She frequently serves as a staff accompanist for Music & Liturgical Arts Week at Lake Junaluska, North Carolina, an annual event sponsored by the Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts.
Joy says that of all the musical experiences she has had during her lifetime, church music is her passion. She feels blessed to be in this church, and to have the opportunity to lead others in making music to the Lord!
