Drama

Maundy Thursday 2010

Drama has become an important aspect of the worship arts at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church. There was a time when our drama ministry consisted of an annual children’s nativity pageant and an occasional children’s musical production. While those events still occur on a regular basis, we are now offering more frequent intergenerational dramatic presentations.

Every Maundy Thursday, we present a musical drama which recounts the events leading up to the crucifixion. The Living Last Supper, our first dramatized Maundy Thursday service, was presented in 2007. Much to our delight, the sanctuary was filled for this event, with many people from the community at large in attendance. A dramatic presentation of the Last Supper and/or events of Good Friday is now a much anticipated event each year during Holy Week.

Likewise, our 2003 Christmas play Dinner at Bethlehem Inn was so well received that our congregation now looks forward to an annual Christmas play and/or musical drama of some type. Typically, the children provide some sort of musical drama or nativity pageant, with an additional adult presentation.

Because we have very few experienced actors in our congregation, the vast majority of our presentations are done by persons with little or no prior drama background. It has been fun watching many of these amateur actors discover a hidden talent they didn’t know they had!

The multi-media world in which we live seems to create a demand for drama. Somehow, adding lights and costumes to any presentation helps to get the point across in a more memorable fashion. It also seems to be true that those who participate in dramatic productions, be they children, youth, or adults, experience the true meaning of the stories and the nature of the characters they portray in a deeply meaningful and lasting way.

We are blessed at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church with a very experienced drama team in the persons of our Drama Director Joyce Tatum and Music Minister Joy Rachor. Their philosophy of church drama is that, while the programs they present are considered to be “performances”, their ultimate goal is to first, foremost, and always glorify God, and Him alone!
